Before this organized event was recognized in New York City, fashion shows were held in Paris in the early 1700s. This initial exhibition was exclusively for shopping clients and was shown to grandchildren. In the 1800's, the show began to change. Charts by Frederick Worth, best known for his hit captures, showcased several pieces of the same design together. Jane Pakin is the first designer to bring her show to life, and Paul Poirier is the first person to host parties after her shows.
In the mid-1800s, May Palin van Materinch, wife of the Austrian princess and ambassador to Paris, saw one of Worth's sketches and hired him to make her dress. She gained considerable recognition through her powerful clients and opened her own hatter house in Paris in 1858, which sold luxury fashion to upper class women.
